If you’re wondering when to schedule your maternity photos, you’re going to want to read this! Here’s the thing about maternity photography in South Florida: the sunshine is gorgeous, but the weather likes to keep us on our toes. I’ll never forget a recent maternity session on the beach. We had been keeping tabs on the forecast (because, hello, Florida and thunderstorms are kind of best friends), and everything looked fine that morning. But just as my clients and I were walking from the parking lot toward the sand, the skies opened up.
It wasn’t a soft drizzle either. It poured. We ended up laughing, running for cover, and ultimately deciding to reschedule for the following weekend. The mama was already near the end of the recommended window for maternity photography, so we were pushing it. By the next weekend, she looked stunning, of course, but she felt a little more swollen, a little less comfortable than she would have earlier.
And that, in itself, is a gentle reminder: timing matters when you’re thinking about scheduling your maternity photos.

Every pregnancy is different. Your body, your baby, your experience – they’re uniquely yours. But through my years as a Miami maternity photographer, I’ve found there really is a “sweet spot” that works beautifully for most parents-to-be, both physically and emotionally.
And yet, I totally get it. Expecting parents are balancing a million and one things, and sometimes scheduling maternity photos fall to the bottom of the to-do list. Many of my clients share that they didn’t realize how fast their bodies would change or how limited photographer availability can be when booking late.
If I could gently nudge you with one piece of advice, it would be this: schedule your maternity session earlier than you think. Let’s talk about what that means in real time.
The Ideal Window for Your Maternity Photos is: 28-34 Weeks Pregnant but you should schedule your maternity photos well in advance of this window to ensure the photographer you want to work with will be available for your dates.
Most clients feel their best and look radiant between 28-34 weeks. At this stage:
Even within that window, if you’re hoping for that dream sunrise or sunset on the beach, or you’re navigating toddler naptimes, it’s worth planning early so we can design a session that works with your rhythm.
Pro tip: If this isn’t your first baby, consider scheduling the session even earlier, around 26-30 weeks. Your bump tends to show sooner with second (and third!) pregnancies, and your energy levels might fluctuate differently.

Book in Your Second Trimester
Most families wait too long to reach out. But by the time you’re 28 weeks, many photographers (myself included) may already be booked out in the ideal timeframe.
That’s why I always suggest building your maternity session into your early baby prep list. When that second trimester energy boost rolls in, use it. Browse your favorite photographers, secure a spot, and cross it off. Trust me, your future self – and your swollen feet – will thank you.

Weather & Lighting Make a Big Impact
Especially here in South Florida, the timing of photo sessions isn’t just about pregnancy weeks – it’s also about that dreamy natural light and dodging unpredictable weather.
If you’re dreaming of a beach, garden, or in-home session, booking early gives us breathing room to pivot if Mother Nature throws us a curveball.

Planning Outfits and Locations Takes Time
When we book your session with ample time, we’re not rushing. You get to enjoy the process – choosing outfits that help you feel beautiful, meaningful locations, even incorporating sentimental items like baby’s first book or heirloom jewelry.
It’s about more than a calendar date. It’s creating space for the story we want to tell.

You don’t need to be “good at photos” to deserve memories that make you feel seen. You don’t have to wait until things are perfect (because, let’s be real, they rarely are). What matters most is preserving this time – this stage of love, transformation, and anticipation.
That’s why I always remind clients: maternity photography isn’t just about your belly. It’s about the way your partner looks at you with quiet awe, the hand on your bump, the gentle moments you’ll one day describe to your child.
So yes, the timing matters. But so does how you feel, who you work with, and the space created to honor this incredible season in your life.

If you’re entering your second trimester, now’s the time to reach out. Scheduling early means we get first pick of dates, plenty of time to plan, and peace of mind as your baby gets closer to arriving.

And remember: whether it’s your beachside bump or quiet in-home moments, you deserve to feel beautiful, grounded, and cared for during this experience.
